Green Your Home This Earth Day

Green Your Home This Earth Day with Cost-Saving Remodeling Tax Credits, Says NAHB

April 19, 2010 – As the 40th anniversary of Earth Day approaches, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) is reminding home owners that they can use fewer resources and save money by taking advantage of federal energy efficiency tax credits through the end of the year.

Home owners who purchase qualifying water heaters, windows, air conditioning units and other appliances, insulation and roofing can be eligible for tax code section 25C tax credit, equivalent to 30 percent of the cost. There’s a $1,500 overall limit for purchases made in 2009 and 2010. Learn the details at www.nahb.org/efficiencytaxcredit.

“You can save money, save energy, and be a good steward of the Earth’s resources,” said NAHB Remodelers Chair Donna Shirey, a remodeler in Issaquah, Wash. “I can’t think of a more appropriate way to commemorate Earth Day.”

Carolyn Taylor of Columbia, S.C., will enjoy Earth Day with a new tankless water heater that supplies plenty of hot water for her active family of four. Remodeler and NAHB member Pete Williams of ATherm Remodeling in Columbia suggested the switch because it was less expensive than relocating her existing gas water heater during a whole-home renovation project.

When Williams told her about the energy-efficiency tax credit the family would also enjoy, that was the icing on the cake, Taylor said. “Any time you can do something that makes a home more energy efficient and saves you money, of course you should do it,” she said.

Remodeler Shawn Nelson in Burnsville, Minn., helped home owners combine the federal credits with a state program that offered rebates for qualifying windows as part of renovation projects he completed over the winter. Home owners can visit www.dsireusa.org for a list of incentive programs where they live.

In a statement last week to the House Ways and Means Committee, NAHB urged Congress to extend the section 25C credit past its December expiration date and to reinstate the section 45L $2,000 tax credit for builders of energy-efficient homes, which expired at the end of 2009.

A more generous credit for appliances that use renewable energy is in effect through 2016. The section 25D credit applies to 30 percent of the total cost of solar panels for electricity or hot water, wind power equipment and the installation of geothermal heat pump systems. This credit can be used in conjunction with new or existing homes.

“These renewable systems are more expensive up front, but may offer significant savings in the long term,” said NAHB Chairman Bob Jones, a builder in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. “Both the 25C and the 25D credits are worth investigating, and you’ll get helpful information from the NAHB Web site, your local home builders association or the NAHB Remodeler member you choose to help you with your renovation and improvement plans.”

Freezing Pipes

December 11, 2009

Just a reminder to keep and eye on freezing water pipes this winter. Last year we had a number of customers who ended up with water pipes freezing in their kitchens and bathrooms causing major damage.

If you have pipes located on an outside wall or in close proximity it is best to let the water run at a slow flow in order to keep the pipes from splitting. Although this may sound a little wasteful it is not nearly as wasteful as having to gut the inside of your home and remodel it.

Looking for a deal? Understand many materials suppliers are looking to move inventories before the end of the year. If a spring project is in order try to secure the materials supplies sooner rather than later.

Preparing A Budget

November 6, 2009

Preparing a budget for a remodeling project is perhaps the most important task any homeowner can perform. With the help of your contractor or designer each and every item (Cabinets, countertop, appliances, floor covering, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, etc….) can and should be broken out in terms of cost. The more time that is spent up front nailing down these itemized cost associated with the project the tighter the budget will remain. Remember it is better to spend time up front planning the budget of the project rather than money after the fact.

Better Business Bureau

October 1, 2009

Without going into the long list of grievances I have with the way the Chicago Branch of the Better Business Bureau conducts it “business” I will simply say that we have opted out of paying the $648 dollar membership dues to the organization that provided us with the worst two years of service. It is of our opinion that if the Better Business Bureau of Chicago is making a “business” out of rating the services of Chicagoland Businesses it should at the very least be able to return repeated emails and phone calls from its “Accredited” “A Rated” members; but again, that is just our humble opinion.

Sincerely,

Scheduling Design Consulations

October 1, 2009

With a slew of phone calls this past week I can only guess that the vacation season is officially over and everyone is looking towards the Holidays. When calling to schedule your free design consultation please try to contact us a week in advance as our much coveted evening appointments are booking up quickly.

Typically there is more then one person involved in the decision making process. We do understand that often times day time consultations conflict with work schedules. As my mother always use to say….”The early bird gets the worm!”.

Kitchen Remodeling Plans

September 5, 2009

With the summer fast coming to an end many homeowners are inquiring about the timing aspects of a kitchen remodel as it relates to the upcoming winter holiday season. Homeowners must know that when a project starts largely depends on the availability of the cabinet line that they ultimately select. Some cabinets can be purchased and acquired the same day and some cabinets take 8-12 weeks to order.

“Remodeling” No Quick Fix!

June 30, 2009

Dirt, dust, debris, and a lot of input from the homeowner is what is necessary to complete a successful remodeling project. Lately I have been getting a number of homeowners that act surprised when I inform them that there large scale projects cannot be completed over the weekend like is shown on HGTV:)
